Showing Up with Intention
How We Identify and Welcome Youth into Our Program
As we begin welcoming our first cohort of youth in Dallas, our child selection process reflects the care and intention that guide us from the very beginning. This approach is not about moving quickly. It is about showing up for the children and families who can benefit most from long-term, professional mentoring.
We start by partnering closely with schools and community organizations who know their communities best. After referrals are submitted, our team enters an observation period to better understand each child’s strengths, needs, and circumstances. During this time, we consider research-based risk and protective factors, with the goal of prioritizing children who are facing more barriers than support early in life.
Beginning mentoring at a young age is a critical part of this work. Many of the children referred to us have already encountered challenges. Starting the relationship during kindergarten allows us to introduce stability and support at a time when it can have lasting impact.
Families are engaged throughout the experience. We build trust with caregivers from the first phone call, continue conversations through in-person meetings, and ensure families have time and space to learn about the program before making a decision. Participation is always voluntary, and caregivers are treated as partners whose voice and perspective matter.
We are already seeing the impact of this intentional approach. Through a partnership with Family Compass, our first professional mentor Asiyah has begun working with children, marking an important milestone as we welcome youth and families into the program.
Reflecting on the enrollment process, Program Director Magaly shares, “It is very rewarding to help establish the initial relationship with caregivers and youth, then see the beginning of a new relationship once I introduce the Friend.”
We are grateful to the schools, community organizations, and families who are working alongside us. Their partnership makes it possible to show up with intention and begin building long-term relationships with children across Dallas.
